Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any disadvantages of porcelain paving?
Porcelain paving has a very low porosity and can be trickier to lay and require a different installation method compared to concrete or natural stone flags. A slurry primer applied to the back of the slab is required to increase adhesion and must be laid on a full mortar bed to prevent the slabs lifting or becoming loose. They can also be trickier to cut and more expensive per square metre compared to other materials.
However, the long term benefits truly outweigh any initial setbacks as porcelain paving is very easy to clean and maintain, and is highly resistant to frost and algae.

Do I need a porcelain grout or can I use a normal cement mix?
When it comes to porcelain paving, it is always advised to use an external tile grout or jointing compound for porcelain paving. Not only are they water resistant to prevent against algae growth, but theyre also expertly designed to fit into those tight, narrow joints.

Do I need to seal porcelain paving?
Porcelain paving has very low porosity so as a general rule it does not require sealing.

Are porcelain tiles slippery when wet?
Generally, no. Most outdoor porcelain paving is manufactured with an R11 anti slip rating, making it suitable for outdoor use in all weather, and areas around swimming pools. While no surface is completely slip proof, choosing porcelain paving with an R11 rating or higher and a textured finish will help minimise the risk of slipping on patios and garden areas.
